Communication is an essential part of the relationship we establish with our patients. Their expectations, beliefs, previous experiences and concerns can influence how they understand treatment and make decisions regarding their oral health.

During this lecture, we will reflect on the development of the therapeutic alliance and on some of the communication challenges that frequently arise in daily dental practice. We will discuss how to explore patient expectations, understand what may lie behind certain requests, and communicate clearly what we can offer as well as the limits of our professional role.

Special attention will be paid to situations in which distrust exists or mutual understanding is difficult to achieve. Through clinical examples, we will review practical strategies to support clearer communication, facilitate shared decision-making and reach agreements that respect both patient needs and professional judgement.

Finally, we will take enough time for your personal questions and exchange.
