Publication on the TPO content of printed occlusal splints recognised as “Hot Paper 2024–2025”

The article “Residual TPO Content of Photopolymerized Additively Manufactured Dental Occlusal Splint Materials” has been recognised by the journal Biomedicines as one of the most-read articles in its “Biomedical Engineering and Materials” section.

This is a particular source of pride for us at DMG, because the article’s authors include not only Prof. Falk Schwendicke of LMU University Hospital Munich, but also several DMG colleagues: Dr Philipp Messer-Hannemann, Dr Max Wienhold, Dr Hoda Esbak, Alexander Brunner, Dr Andreas Schönebaum and Dr Susanne Effenberger.

This recognition reflects the high level of international attention the article received within the defined period following its publication, and highlights the sustained scientific interest in toxicologically safe dental materials.

Valuable insights for safe handling

This award-winning study investigates the toxicological risk posed by the release of residual TPO from light-curing, 3D-printed resins used to fabricate occlusal splints. The aim was to determine the amount of extractable TPO under simulated oral conditions and to estimate the potential risk to the safe use of these medical devices.

The findings provide valuable insights into a current field of research and underline the importance of applied research for the development and safe use of additively manufactured dental devices.
