Molar-incisor hypomineralisation (MIH) is not only a clinical challenge, but also an aesthetic problem for many affected patients. A recent systematic review (Prado et al.) and meta-analysis investigated how effective infiltration therapy is in masking MIH opacities – and the effects of making adjustments to the treatment protocol.
The analysis, which involved tooth treatments in a total of 369 patients, showed that infiltration reduces the colour difference between MIH opacities and healthy enamel, regardless of the treatment protocol.
Modified protocols – for example with longer etching times or repeat applications – tended to achieve better results than the standard procedure. The study thus confirms the fundamental effectiveness of infiltration in MIH lesions in the anterior region and highlights the need for more controlled studies to further optimise its application.
